The Perfect Smile

Mother Teresa once said that “We shall never know all the good a simple smile can do” and its true. Many people forget that their smile, and teeth, are often a focal point to their face and with the perfect smile they can convey a thousand words.

But maintaining the perfect smile isn’t difficult and with just a few tips and regular maintenance you can ensure you have the best smile around – encroaching on some of the most famous pearly whites!

Over recent years I have put great focus on maintaining my teeth and trying to get them white and presentable. There’s nothing worse than being worried about the state of your teeth as when you’re talking to people it can really knock your confidence – I am sure we all know the feeling of having something stuck in your teeth, that’s embarrassing enough, but further major problems could cause permenant anxiety over the fact.

So, let me share how I manage and maintain my teeth to ensure I am aiming for the perfect smile!

1. Brush, brush, brush – from a young age we are told of the importance of brushing your teeth. Before and after bed, plus ideally after meals – although of course this isn’t always practical. Whilst I have used an ordinary toothbrush for many years, since my switch to an electric one the results have been amazing. My teeth feel so much cleaner and now when I use a regular toothbrush, on holiday or on a weekend away, I can definitely see and feel the difference.

2. Whiten – Now whitening products you need to be slightly careful with because you don’t want them to ruin the enamel on your teeth. I have previously tried the fully fledged whitening treatments where you have to shape the mouth guard, etc but find these are too long winded and I then start to not bother with them. However, since discovering the Colgate whitening strips (you can pick them up for a reasonable price on eBay) I don’t need to use any of the longer methods at all! This product comes in an individual sachet, containing a strip for your upper and lower teeth. Leave on for around 10 minutes, remove and you will instantly notice the difference. Many people swear by these and I know I certainly do now too!

3. Straighten and fix – if you have major issues with your teeth and they are causing you pain, concern or anguish then look to see what procedures are available to you. I am not saying that everybody should have perfectly straight teeth because if it doesn’t bother you, then there is no reason to change it! But if you are finding it an issue why not look in to invisible braces? As an adult the idea of having the metal braces my friends sported at school is slightly off putting, but try fastbraces in London and see how they could change your teeth for the better.

4. Floss – I always thought this was a bit of a pointless task and didn’t see why so much priority was put on it. I was brushing my teeth twice a day, that was enough – wasn’t it? Well since undertaking the task of flossing at any available opportunity I certainly notice the difference. Removing any remaining food from between your gnashers means that there is less possibility of bacteria forming and creating bad breath or worse. Flossing doesn’t take long and it will help even further in keeping your teeth clean, fresh and sparkling.

These are my top tips for achieving and maintaining the perfect smile – what are yours?

Maybelline Lash Sensational Review

When it comes to mascara I must admit that I’m usually an avid Bene-babe. Such a fan, I can put my hands up to often making a naughty purchase or two whenever Head Benefit Makeup Artist Lisa Potter-Coyne is on QVC.

I get completely drawn in by the offers and Lisa’s warm, fun personality as she showcases the latest makeup trends. – Can you tell I have a slight girl crush!

Not only do I love their general makeup ethos, their fabulously pretty packaging and the obvious results, make it a firm favourite in my beauty bag. In fact, I’d say 90% of my makeup is Benefit. Oops.

But when my ‘They’re Real’ ran dry on a recent trip away, panic took over as the only brands stocked in the drug store were the usual suspects, so grabbing what I could, I prayed to the beauty gods to give me a break and make it a worthy purchase.

Well my prayers must have been answered, because despite my reluctance, the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara turned out to be quite the hidden gem.

Like most mascaras on first use it was a little wet and messy, but once I had cleaned off the excess product and given it a good wiggle along my eye line, it soon started to transform my short fluffy lashes into an array of fluttery spider legs.

The first coat leaves much to be desired, but be patient as three coats later it gives an incredible look that could be classed as false lashes.

Like my old faithful ‘They’re Real’ is does draw similarities on removal, as it just doesn’t seem to want to come off. I would definitely recommend having some makeup remover to hand or even my personal favourite Cleanse & Polish by Liz Earle.

I never thought I would reconsider my love for Benefit, but now I’ve seen just how good the drug store brands are becoming it’s obvious that Benefit has stiff competition.

If you want the ‘They’re Real’ effect without the premium price tag, I would definitely recommend giving the Lash Sensational a go, as unlike many brands, it does what it says.

Sensational lashes are now all mine, but for a fraction of the price.

Hair: From Frizz to Waves

There’s a big difference between frizzy and wavy hair. Both may consist of leaving your locks in its natural state but one does so with style whilst the other leaves you looking like you have got up on the wrong side of bed. So what can you do to ensure your hair is transformed from flyaway frizz to sleek and stylish waves?

Well, the first step is to wash your hair. If you’re aiming for wavy or curly hair, you should use appropriate products. Shampoo designed for straight hair isn’t going to help you achieve your desired look so instead, opt for a shampoo and conditioner designed to tame frizzy hair.

One of the reasons why frizz might occur is due to a lack of moisture in your hair. When conditioning, be sure to leave the product in your hair for a while before washing it out. This will allow the conditioner to work its magic. When you do rinse your hair, use cold water as it will keep your cuticles flat and leave your hair looking shiny and healthy as opposed to frizzy.

When brushing your hair make sure you do this when it is wet as brushing your hair when it is dry will upset your cuticles and create unwanted frizz. You should also try to use a wide tooth comb or if possible, just run your fingers through your hair.

Next you need to dry your hair. Heat damage is a major cause of frizz so try to avoid using a hair dryer. Instead, leave enough time to allow your hair to dry naturally. If you need to leave it overnight, try wrapping a t-shirt around your hair as opposed to a rough towel to prevent your hair from becoming frizzy as you move around in your sleep. If you decide you want to add some waves or curls to your locks, use non-heated rollers whilst your hair is still damp to create the look whilst avoiding heat damage.

So if you follow these simple steps your hair should now be left sleek and shiny. To maintain the look and master those natural waves, add some frizz-friendly hairspray or styling cream.
