Mother Teresa once said that “We shall never know all the good a simple smile can do” and its true. Many people forget that their smile, and teeth, are often a focal point to their face and with the perfect smile they can convey a thousand words.
But maintaining the perfect smile isn’t difficult and with just a few tips and regular maintenance you can ensure you have the best smile around – encroaching on some of the most famous pearly whites!
Over recent years I have put great focus on maintaining my teeth and trying to get them white and presentable. There’s nothing worse than being worried about the state of your teeth as when you’re talking to people it can really knock your confidence – I am sure we all know the feeling of having something stuck in your teeth, that’s embarrassing enough, but further major problems could cause permenant anxiety over the fact.
So, let me share how I manage and maintain my teeth to ensure I am aiming for the perfect smile!
1. Brush, brush, brush – from a young age we are told of the importance of brushing your teeth. Before and after bed, plus ideally after meals – although of course this isn’t always practical. Whilst I have used an ordinary toothbrush for many years, since my switch to an electric one the results have been amazing. My teeth feel so much cleaner and now when I use a regular toothbrush, on holiday or on a weekend away, I can definitely see and feel the difference.
2. Whiten – Now whitening products you need to be slightly careful with because you don’t want them to ruin the enamel on your teeth. I have previously tried the fully fledged whitening treatments where you have to shape the mouth guard, etc but find these are too long winded and I then start to not bother with them. However, since discovering the Colgate whitening strips (you can pick them up for a reasonable price on eBay) I don’t need to use any of the longer methods at all! This product comes in an individual sachet, containing a strip for your upper and lower teeth. Leave on for around 10 minutes, remove and you will instantly notice the difference. Many people swear by these and I know I certainly do now too!
3. Straighten and fix – if you have major issues with your teeth and they are causing you pain, concern or anguish then look to see what procedures are available to you. I am not saying that everybody should have perfectly straight teeth because if it doesn’t bother you, then there is no reason to change it! But if you are finding it an issue why not look in to invisible braces? As an adult the idea of having the metal braces my friends sported at school is slightly off putting, but try fastbraces in London and see how they could change your teeth for the better.
4. Floss – I always thought this was a bit of a pointless task and didn’t see why so much priority was put on it. I was brushing my teeth twice a day, that was enough – wasn’t it? Well since undertaking the task of flossing at any available opportunity I certainly notice the difference. Removing any remaining food from between your gnashers means that there is less possibility of bacteria forming and creating bad breath or worse. Flossing doesn’t take long and it will help even further in keeping your teeth clean, fresh and sparkling.
These are my top tips for achieving and maintaining the perfect smile – what are yours?
