Located in a leafy, residential suburb of Hamburg the Ibis Styles Alster City is the perfect base for your trip to Hamburg – and it’s certainly not 2 star material!
From the bright decor of the hotel itself and it’s rooms, to the novel accessories and offerings this hotel is quirky, comfortable and provides everything you could want for a break away from home.
We were greeted by friendly staff who took the time to tell us what was on offer around the hotel, and reception even had complimentary oranges and chupa chups! It’s the little things…
Whilst the rooms didn’t have individual kettles there was a main one in reception all day with a wide choice of teas, as well as freshly made coffee. This paired with takeaway cups and lids was the perfect idea and we enjoyed a hot drink both in the lounge area and on the go.
The rooms are minimalist but to a good standard. They have phones that offer free calls to local numbers, a very modern and sparkling clean bathroom, a large clothes rail and even a Fat Boy bean bag for your use!
What I really loved about these rooms is that they were all individually painted and not just left magnolia or white. This really makes it much warmer and more of an enjoyable place to spend your time.
Now the beds! The main reason I didn’t want to leave this hotel at the end of my stay. You might as well have both been sleeping in seperate rooms for the size of the beds, there were certainly no interrupted nights sleep! Combined with the cosiest pillows and duvet, Ibis Styles really can’t do much more to improve – particularly when it’s minus degrees outside, a big comfortable bed is exactly what you want to return to!
One evening we decided to stay in an enjoy a few drinks in the bar. Whilst not huge, nor boasting a vast bar menu, the basics are all there and this bar really felt relaxed. You could easily sit there all afternoon and evening working or just chatting to friends. There was no urgency and the bar staff appeared occasionally to see if you wanted a refreshed drink, but did not linger to listen to conversations.
We got a lot of great advice on the best local hot spots from the lovely woman working overnight. She has been a Hamburg local for many years so knew all the best, and mostly unknown, spots to visit. Advice from those that live and enjoy the area itself is always my favourite to follow!
The hotel is convenient too to enable you to see the most of the city. Just a 5 minutes walk from Hamburg Strasse which is on the U3 train line, enabling you to reach the city centre, museums, lakes and even the party quarter within a maximum of 20 minutes.
Even the airport is only 25 minutes away by train!
The hotels restaurant is open for breakfast only, which is included in the rate. Typical to Germany, and Europe mostly, this was a continental offering but delicious all the same. From boiled eggs to a range of ham, cheese and even ready made bagels. A great start to the day could be finished with a croissant and Nutella too. Don’t expect a hot fried breakfast, but certainly do expect to be left feeling well fed.
I genuinely cannot recommend the Ibis Styles Alster City more and it certainly deserves more than it’s 2* Superior rating in my opinion. Spotless, chic and relaxed – the perfect pad for your travels.0
